Contact lenses offer an alternative way to correct your vision, so you don’t need to wear eyeglasses. The lenses fit over your cornea, iris, and pupil in the center of the eye.

Contact lenses have several advantages over glasses. They provide more natural vision as you don’t look through a frame. Many people also find them more comfortable because there’s no pressure on your nose or the sides of your head.

If you lead an active life, contact lenses are ideal. They don’t fall off or get caught on things, you can wear protective headgear more comfortably, and you don’t have problems like misting and rain on the lenses that can happen with glasses.

North Florida Eye Center’s contact lens range includes:

• Soft contact lenses: Soft contact lenses are the most widely used and are often disposable after a day’s use. They have a gel-like consistency that molds to the eye’s shape. Soft lenses offer comfortable vision improvement for people with common problems like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and presbyopia (age-related lens hardening).

 

• Gas-permeable contact lenses: Unlike soft lenses, gas-permeable lenses are rigid. They’re suitable for people with dry eye and those affected by astigmatism (poor vision caused by a distorted cornea).

 

• Hybrid lenses: Hybrid contact lenses have a rigid, gas-permeable center and soft edges. Hybrid lenses serve the same functions as soft contact lenses but also treat keratoconus, a condition where your cornea bulges and becomes cone-shaped.

 

• Multifocal lenses: Multifocal contact lenses have varying strengths in one lens. They work like bifocal or varifocal eyeglasses for people with both nearsightedness and farsightedness.

 

• Toric lenses: Toric lenses are designed specifically for people with astigmatism. These soft contact lenses mold closely to abnormally shaped corneas.

Before fitting your contact lenses, your North Florida Eye Center doctor performs a comprehensive eye exam. They check that your eyes are healthy and assess problems that affect which lenses you can wear, like astigmatism. They also do a sight test to determine your perfect contact lens prescription.

Your eye doctor goes through the contact lens options available to you and helps you choose those that suit you and your lifestyle best. They also show you how to put your contact lenses in, take them out, and care for them.
